Jay Wong is helping entrepreneurs take the “creators leap of faith.”
What’s your story?
I’m an international speaker, podcasting launch coach and executive producer of The Inner Changemaker; the podcast dedicated to purpose driven entrepreneurs and multi-passionate creators.
My show was the number 1 self-improvement podcast when it launched in 2015 and recently got nominated as a Top 10 Business podcast for 2016. I am speaking at Podcast Movement; the largest podcasting conference in the world, this upcoming July about developing the creator’s mindset.
My mission is to inspire others to take the “creators” leap of faith.
What excites you most about your industry?
I believe we live in one of the most exciting periods. With the internet maturing, but still young, more and more people are realising that they are a messenger or a creator and they have a message pent up in them that they need to get out to the world.
Leveraging the online space and the resurgence of podcasts is an amazing opportunity for everyone. Now, because you have a computer or a cell phone, you get to have a say in the marketplace.
It doesn’t mean that you are destined to ‘make it’, but never has it ever been easier for you to have a chance to see how far you really can go.
What’s your connection to Asia?
I think, like most Asians that grew up in North America, you grew up with a strange connection to Asia. My parents would speak Cantonese and Mandarin at home to me and I would answer back in English.
It wasn’t until I decided to vagabond in Asia and live Shanghai for most of 2014 that I learnt how to speak Mandarin.
My Chinese is still a work in progress, but it feels great to know that I can connect with others in any of the three languages.
Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Shanghai always holds a special place in my heart. I went there during a time that I was searching for myself and my message for the world.
The scenes from the Bund to the hustle and bustle of the city is truly unforgettable. Shanghai has this energy and vibe that is unmatched anywhere else I have been.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Stop focusing on the labels you give yourself. For example, leader, entrepreneur, accountant, manager etc. It doesn’t matter. You are one thing and that is a creator. Once you make this shift to developing a creator’s mindset, everything will shift.
Who inspires you?
Juvan Langford, Alex Ikonn (5-min Journal) and Brendon Burchard.
All of these guys are blazing their own trails in life and creating movements that are bigger than themselves and their businesses.
What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
When you stop focusing on making money and you focus on the movement and impact that you are creating instead, you have the power of changing the world. Opportunities will seek you out rather than you chasing opportunities around.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I would start earlier, fail more often and risk more. So far, no regrets.
How do you unwind?
Travelling with my girlfriend and drinking delicious Italian red wine. I am also a big fan of ‘digital detoxes’ where you don’t check email or your phone for 24-48 periods.
Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Ko Phi Phi islands in Thailand. It’s an underrated scuba diving area and extremely breath-taking. The party is great, people are super nice and the food is absolutely delicious.
