“Video killed the radio star” In 1979 The Buggles might have been on to something.  As shooting and viewing video becomes ever easier, your ability to be comfortable on camera and get your ideas across in a compelling and engaging manner is going to be critical for anyone wanting to get ahead.  Enter Paul Carr…

What’s your story?

Former news presenter / journalist with the ABC in Sydney. For past eleven years I’ve been coaching company executives to communicate with greater confidence.

What excites you most about your industry?

The fact that more & more people are telling their stories using video recordings on social media, youtube etc. More people than ever before need to know how to present themselves in a confident manner & feel comfortable in front of a camera.

What’s your connection to Asia?

I moved from Sydney to Singapore in 2003 to be with my partner. We have offices in Singapore & Sydney.

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?

Hong Kong because it’s not pretending to be something that it’s not. There’s an energy in the city that I don’t feel in other Asian cities. People walk with purpose. Hong Kong’s young people still have the courage to stand up and ask for what they want.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Nothing is that important that it can’t wait until tomorrow – sleep first.

Who inspires you?

Richard Branson, David Marr, Christopher Hitchens, Gough Whitlam, Phillip Adams.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?

That my new video camera has a built-in projector! This means playback of coaching sessions & mock interviews is a breeze.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

I wouldn’t expect the world to change based on science, research & logic. It seems we are addicted to the flawed ideas of our grandfathers.

How do you unwind?

Reading, listening to podcasts, traveling & catching up with old friends.

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?

Phuket – clear water, great food, friendly people.
