Sponsorship and strategic partnerships has enabled Torrey Dorsey to travel and meet interesting people throughout the Asia Pacific region.

What’s your story?
I am a former tennis professional that has embarked on a career in sponsorship and strategic partnerships. Having a sports background, it was obvious for me to remain in this industry, but my focus has subsequently shifted to the sports and luxury lifestyle realm; in particular, polo and yachting. These are considered the only two sports where an amateur can compete side-by-side with professionals in ‘live’ competition, which creates compelling stories and interesting opportunities. Although both sports are considered ‘elite’, there are in fact opportunities for anyone to learn and enjoy not only the sport, but also the friendship, fraternity and passion that exemplifies the lifestyle that each represents!

What excites you most about your industry?
I am most excited by the opportunity to travel and collaborate with many interesting people, brands and organisations. I often say that I do not work as my work is a passion, and for this I am very fortunate! Sponsorship and strategic partnerships are based on the relationship that you create and maintain with your client, and the goals and objectives of such partnerships always change. Therefore, I never feel redundant or bored in my work environment. However, I am still accountable to my employer and responsible for financial targets like anyone in this industry or a sales focused role!

What’s your connection to Asia?
I first moved to Asia in 1990 (Macau) and have remained in the Asia Pacific region for most of my career, including roles in Macau, India, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Work has taken me to many more countries and I hope that I have the privilege to continue to do so!

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
My favourite city for business in Asia is Hong Kong as it is a very dynamic city and considered the gateway to and from mainland China.  I have an affinity for Singapore given the lifestyle there and it’s many special events; however, the business environment in Hong Kong is fast and furious!

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Do what you love.

Who inspires you?
I have had many mentors in my career and am inspired and motivated by several individuals:
· My mother, Joan for teaching me strong values and manners
· Glen Nicholson (former MD, Nicholson Media Group, Melbourne, Australia) for instilling discipline, accountability and FUN in my career
· Iqbal Jumabhoy (former President, Singapore Polo Club) for his wisdom and guidance
· My son, Noah for his youthful energy, ambition and maturity beyond his years
· And my wife, Jessamine for keeping me humble and sharing my excitement for life and its possibilities.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
The Asian culture (and its many intricacies) never ceases to amaze me! But, the recent passing of Lee Kuan Yew, founder and former Prime Minister of Singapore, and the many reflections of his life has impressed me! To think that, that country is only 50 years old and its founder survived until today.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Master a second and third language.

How do you unwind?
Music is a passion and I like to be surrounded by music whenever possible. Tennis and horse riding are also pursuits that I enjoy when possible. I am also just as content on the couch at home with newspapers, magazines and books!

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Singapore as this city is my “second home”.  I am surrounded by familiar faces and places, and a certain level of comfort there.

Shameless plug for your business:
The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is considered one of the top 10 yachts clubs in the world and has the largest active membership of any yacht club in the world. The Club hosts a comprehensive calendar of events – from major offshore yacht races to inter-school sailing festivals to world championships! And it is proud of its association with its many commercial partners, including Rolex, Audi and Edmond De Rothschild.
